Over the past years, people have been considering to start migrating their gaming rigs to Linux, I’ve also tried breaking free from shitdows, here are my thoughts on it:
Pros & Good news:
- Overall, Linux is more privacy friendly
- Games run quite more efficiently than on Windows due to more hardware access and less bloat
- VALVe has been working on a patch of WineHQ for their game launcher, Steam, called Proton. This is where we see a mass support of games on Linux.
- Even though Roblox has tried stopping WINE support, the developers of Vinegar have worked on an even better Roblox on Linux workaround. https://sober.vinegarhq.org
- Not only Windows → Linux games are in the works, but we’ve got ways to play mobile games on Linux as if they were desktop games (no stuttering like the android emulators in Windows)
- there is even MORE support for retro games on linux! Check out DOSBox, RetroArch, Kodi, EmulationStation, etc
What needs to be worked on:
- Support for modern Linux features, especially Wayland
- More libraries for WineHQ (especially in the winetricks GUI) so more games are compatible.
Conclusion
This year, Linux gaming has improved quite a lot actually! Though I’ll be waiting on some more support for Windows apps like Visual Studio 2022 before I completely ditch Windows VMs
